Size Guide: Getting the Right Fit for Kids' Traditional Clothes

We get it — sizing for kids' ethnic wear is tricky. Age labels vary between brands, kids grow at different rates, and traditional clothes fit differently from western wear. This guide will make it simple.
Why Age-Based Sizing Alone Doesn't Work
A 3-year-old can vary from 90cm to 105cm in height. That's a massive difference when it comes to lehenga length or kurta fit. That's why we always recommend measuring your child rather than just going by age.
How to Measure Your Child (5 Minutes, 3 Measurements)
You'll need: a soft measuring tape (the sewing kind, not a metal one).
Measurement 1: Chest/Bust
- Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms
- Keep it snug but not tight — you should be able to fit one finger underneath
- Note the measurement in inches or cm
Measurement 2: Waist
- Measure around the natural waistline (the narrowest part of the torso)
- For kids under 3, this is usually just above the belly button
- Important: Measure after a normal meal, not on an empty stomach
Measurement 3: Height/Length
- Stand your child against a wall without shoes
- For lehenga length: Measure from waist to ankle (not floor)
- For kurta length: Measure from shoulder to mid-thigh (for short kurta) or to knee (for long kurta)
- For gown length: Measure from shoulder to ankle

Always go one size up. Here's why:
- Traditional Indian clothes can be adjusted down (take in the waist, shorten the length) but can't be made bigger
- Kids grow fast — an outfit ordered for a wedding next month might be snug by the event
- Ethnic wear is often looser-fitting than western clothes — a slightly larger size still looks great
- Heavy silk naturally drapes better with a little extra room
Common Sizing Mistakes to Avoid
- Measuring over thick clothes — Always measure directly on the body or over thin innerwear
- Using old measurements — Kids can grow 2-3 inches in just 3 months
- Ignoring the blouse/choli — The top matters as much as the bottom. Always check shoulder width
- Not accounting for diapers — For babies, add 1 inch to the waist measurement if they'll wear diapers under the outfit
- Forgetting footwear — If your child will wear heels or platform ethnic shoes, shorten the length slightly
